NORTHERN TEHAMA, SOUTHERN SHASTA COUNTY REGION:  Here you will find a fairly large group of wineries located east and west of Highway 5 between the northern Sacramento Valley towns of Red Bluff and Redding.  This is a beautiful area of rolling foothills that generally produces heat loving grapes in the rolling topography of the very north end of the Sacramento Valley area.  Its warm days and cool nights allows the grapes to hang a little longer than you might suspect, allowing them to retain enough acid for structure and zest in the wines and a good depth of flavor.

Alger Vineyards & Winery:  Located north east of Red Bluff off Highway 36, Alger Vineyards & Winery is found in an almost enchanted valley surrounded by volcanic cinder cones on two sides and the rolling  foothills of the upper Sierra Nevada Mountains and Mount Lassen in the distance on the others.  It takes a bit of time to get there, but the trip through the back country roads of southern Shasta County, northern Tehama County is beautifully scenic.  The tasting room is tastefully done in a modern Spanish style with a light airy feel and incredible views.  Just off the back of the tasting room is a patio with tables offering that same great view to relax with your latest wine purchase.  The winery decidedAlger Vineyards & Winery to move into organic farming in the late 1990s and has now decided to move into the practice of biodynamic farming which embraces the concept of a self-sustainable environment.  The winemaker at Alger is Bob Marr, a graduate of Humboldt State University who worked at such wineries as San Pasqual and Columbia.  The winery specializes in award winning Syrah and Petite Sirah that did quite well at the Chronicle Wine Competition earlier this year.   The tasting room is open every Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 pm.

Burnsini Vineyards:  Located on the west side of Highway 5, roughly half way between Red Bluff and Redding at the 700 foot elevation, the vineyards are warmer than those of the Manton or Shingletown region.  They currently offer Petite Sirah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel and a red wine blend.  This is truly a boutique size winery, currently offering 1700 cases of wine for sale, but that number grows every year.  To visit the winery be sure to call ahead for an appointment.
