SOUTHERN TEHAMA COUNTY REGION: This region is closer to Butte County than Shasta, so when making a trip to this area you may want to use our Sister Site, Sierra Wines and the information on Butte County to find some other near by wineries. This is a northern valley region that can be quite hot in the summer with none of the sea breezes that impact the central valley. It relies, instead, on the actual heat to shut the vines down and lengthen hang times. Cool region grapes will not do well, and so the winery tends to depend on grapes like Tempranillo and Barbera instead of Pinot and Chardonnay.
New Clairvaux Vineyard: This is a winery we heard about when we were making a trip to explore the wineries of Butte County. While visiting Grey Fox Vineyards in Oroville we were told the story of a Monastic Winery with a building on site that dated back to the 1300s in Spain. It was too good to pass up and we made it to the winery in April of this year for our first visit. Closer to Chico than to Red Bluff or Redding, this is the only Monastic Winery in the Americas. The winery has an incredible history and beautiful location that we could not hope to explain in this small space, so click here to read the full article on this great winery. Continued ...
