Amador City, like so many of the Foothill communities, grew up quickly in the 1850s after gold was discovered in rock outcroppings on the banks of the creek that runs through town. There followed a number of different mining ventures, the most significant and long lived of which was The Keystone, organized in 1853 and remaining in operation sporadically until 1942. This operation produced over $24 million in gold and the offices are now a bed and breakfast located at the southwest end of town. The town was incorporated in 1915, and with its population of just over 200 people, is one of the smallest cities in California.
The residents of this quaint little piece of Gold Country have been working hard to make Amador City a destination. They had the foresight to understand the real gold mine existed in all of the historic, well preserved buildings that have survived and still line the main street of town. These wonderful old buildings and the resident’s determination to preserve their Gold Rush heritage has resulted in a place that still has that enchanting Old West look and feel. There is a atmosphere of an earlier time with the beautiful historic Victorian Homes, authentic Gold Rush era gardens, and picturesque wooden sidewalks that run through downtown. The friendly people who live and work there make you feel a part of their community even if you are just stopping by for the afternoon. Continued ...
