This is bike riding heaven, whether you street ride or mountain bike ride.  We only had time for two rides, but we did look around at several other rides in the area and absolutely plan to make it back there to give a few more a try.  The best thing we found were fairly wide and quiet roads, very unlike the most of California, with scenery that can only be described as incredible.  We started with a trip up Mt. Shasta itself to the site of the old ski resort. The ride is 4200 total feet of climbing and 14 miles one way.

In the 1970s there was a small ski resort located at about the 7800 foot elevation of Mt Shasta at the end of the Everitt Memorial Highway.  The resort had suffered a few setbacks and then in 1978 an avalanche came down and took out the ski lifts, which signaled the end of the resort.  Today the road is only plowed to the 6000 foot level, so the entire ride is usually only available from late June until October.
