North Lake Tahoe to Donner Summit
Distance 50 miles, 2300 Feet of Climbing
The great thing about the Tahoe region is the amazing amount of bicycling choices for riders of all experience levels, both road and mountain biking. We decided to try a ride we have wanted to do for years, the trip from the North Lake Tahoe to the top of Donner Summit on old Highway 40. Prior to the construction of Highway 80 this was the only way to get through this part of the high Sierras from Sacramento. It is narrow and fairly steep, but because few people use it as a thoroughfare anymore it is now a popular bike riding route. |
There are a number of different spots to start this ride. We chose to park in the bike trail parking lot just south of Tahoe City on the west side of Highway 89. The parking lot is very large but was almost full, not with bicyclists, but rafters. This serves as a major put in point for recreational rafters wanting to do the three mile float on the Truckee River to Bear Creek pull out point. We were able to find a parking spot in a dirt section and headed out on the trail.
Normally we would probably skip the busy trail and ride the street but Highway 89 was very busy and we felt it was safer to stick to the trail. It was a great morning for walking or biking and the trail was pretty packed. We knew we were going to need to take our time, but there were a few people on the trail who were unbelievably discourteous. There were women pushing baby carriages two across with no desire to let anyone get by and just ignored you when you asked to pass and men carrying rafts taking up most of the trail. It is great that so many people use these wonderful resources and if you have a need for speed, don’t go this way, it can be dangerous. We saw a few bicyclists trying to go too fast and almost hit someone; courtesy does go two ways. We took our time and just enjoyed the incredible scenery of the Truckee River surrounded by the tree covered slopes of the Continued ....
