Grilled Hamburgers, Potatoes and Corn - The beauty of this meal was no pans to clean, its all done on the grill. I used a lightly smoky barbeque sauce in the meat, which may have been just a bit strong for the wine, but would work beautifully with a more robust Zin or Syrah.
Grilled Potatoes - I actually used a spicy macadamia nut oil on these, although the recipe calls for Olive oil because it is much easier to find. This oil gives a great nutty taste whatever you use it on plus adding quite a kick. The spicy nutiness went very well with the fruitiness in the wine.
Grilled Corn - I used a basic olive oil on the corn, but an infused oil would work as well. This actually went fine with the Zin, but is the perfect match for a Chardonnay. |
2004 Single Leaf Zinfandel - This was a Zin with big fruit forward flavors and nice oak. The wine was a deep magenta in color with just a hint of rim variation and some great, intense tears. The fruit was dominated by black raspberry, black cherry, and some raisin followed by sweet baking spices. The mouthfeel was fairly full with tart black fruit in the attack, the finish had just a bit of burn, some good acidity, and a finish of a very lovely toastiness. There was a good structure of smoothly rounded tannin. This is definately a fruit dominated wine that amost made you think there was some residual sugar, although it was completely dry in the finish. |
