WOW! These were six very nice Zins, some closer in style than others, but all were acceptable variations on a theme: the Zinfandel Grape. Since we don't focus on ranking in these tastings, just the profile of each wine in each category, it made agreement easier than if we had had to agree on a ranking. We all had our favorite and they weren't all the same. Let's just say there is something here for everyone who likes a good Zin.
We tried to follow the original format we had designed, but there were just too many wines that had only nuances of differences to complete this tasting in the usual half hour. It was great fun, too much fun to cut short. In the end we took more than an hour to finish. When we were done we each picked our favorite and drank it with barbequed tri tip marinated in a spicy teriyaki sauce. They all worked well with the pairing, some worked better because of the spice and some worked better because of the great tannin with big red meat.
The following grid is the composite results of the input of all of the tasters. These are all fairly easy wines to find for sale, but in California the vintage variation isn't as great as other places, so pick the next year if that is all you can find and see if you agree with our results.
