Pairing Characteristics |
| Cheeses |
Dry and crisp |
Parmesan, Sharp cheddar, Feta |
| All types of Beef, including hamburger |
Grilled, barbequed are best, but other strong cooking styles fine. |
The usually full body of this wine pairs well with full fattier, bolder bodied meats. The charcoal flavors pairs with oak aging spices. |
| Chicken |
Roasted, Grilled or Barbequed |
The heavier body of this style chicken pairs to Syrah's body. |
| Duck or Turkey |
Roasted |
The fruitiness of the Syrah Rose and higher acidity work well with the traditional sauces and side dishes associated with duck or turkey. |
| Lamb |
Grilled, Braised, Roasted |
The spicy sweetness of lamb matches the spiciness and fruit in the wine. Use mint as a bridge to the wine's herbaceous possibilities. |
| Sausages, slightly spicy or herb flavored |
Baked, Grilled, Fried, Barbequed, etc. |
The flavors and aromas in Syrah are particularly closely tied to all types of sausage as long as it is not overly spicy. |
| Pork |
Grilled, barbequed are best, but other strong cooking styles work fine. |
The medium to full body pairs well with full, fattier, bolder bodied meats. The charcoal flavors pairs with oak aging spices. |
| Salmon or Tuna |
Grilled, barbequed, etc. |
The strong flavors and body of these fish work well with the body and earthy flavors of the wine. |

Fruit: Red Cherry, Strawberry, Black currant, Plums, figs
Non-Fruit: Licorice, Chocolate, Vanilla, Toast, Cooking Spice and Great Smokiness.
Region(s)Although thought to be a Foothill Wine by many, award winning versions are being made in a number of different California regions including:
Contra Costa County, Lake County, Livermore, Lodi, Mendocino County, Paso Robles, Sierra Foothills, Sonoma County.
Other Notes: Barberas in California are often made from riper fruit than is found in its home region of Piedmont, Spain. This can create a much more fruit forward wine than found in cooler regions. This, however, is a large over simplification of the variety available in California Wine Country. To read more see our feature article: Syrah. |
